Community Perceptions on the Transformation of a high-altitude Grassland Through Invasion by Leucosidea sericea at Vuvu, South Africa

Abstract We assessed perceptions of Leucosidea sericea , a woody plant that is increasing in density such it may threaten rangelands among agro-pastoralists whose livelihoods rely on livestock (56%) and crop farming (36%) Vuvu, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Using semi-structured questionnaires, we asked 198 respondents about the spread species last few decades, its impact availability graze for livestock. Responses indicated L. started spreading 1950s, with marked increases 2011–2020, particularly mountainous areas used grazing as well by rivers village residences. Respondents suggested were main biological agent seed dispersal, ownership had increased dramatically recent years, preference sheep (a minimum 120 per household). Overall, encroachment negatively affected their community.
